Xiamen University master’s International Chinese Education program ranks at China’s top 6

As a saying goes, "No better prize than people's praise" , to some extent, people's comment is also symbolic reflecting teaching level of a subject, recently, " some nongovernmental educational institutes like "Qing Si Kao Yan" ranked masters' International Chinese Education program, Xiamen University ranked at sixth, getting ahead of Sun-yat-sun University, Nankai University, Fudan University and Nanjing University, it is the top 4th among China's 985 universities and the top 5th among China's 211 universities.


It is said that Academic Degree Commission of China State Council officially agreed to set up master degree for International Chinese Education, so far, there are 82 universities have this program. Overseas Education College of Xiamen University began to enrolling international students in 2009,within a few years, its academic influence expended year by year, and the social impact sharply increased, number of graduates increased from initial 21 to 179 now, almost 8 times' increasing, moreover, applicants of International Chinese Education broke a new record this year, What is the reason that massive overseas students choose Xiamen University's master degree of International Chinese Education?

Overseas Education College is Xiamen University's higher educational institution for international education, as well as one of the Chinese earliest institutions carrying out international education, the college was firstly founded in 1956, and was renamed Overseas Education College under the permission of Ministry of Education of PRC in 1991. Now, Overseas Education College of Xiamen University sets up Chinese Language Department, Distance Teaching Department, Educational Research Institute of Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language, Confucius Institute Developmental Research Center, Confucius Institute Online Education Technology Development and Promotion Center, International Chinese Language Teachers Training Center, Nationalized Chinese Language Materials Development Center and so on, as well as setting up exam sites for National Language Committee mandarin level test and China Hanban HSK test, it is the key college for China Hanban to support Chinese language teaching in countries near around.


At present, Overseas Education College enrolls both the Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language and Linguistics majored academic learning oriented post-graduates and International Chinese Education majored professional post-graduates. Besides, it enrolls overseas Chinese language undergraduates, short-term and long-term advanced scholars, online education overseas undergraduates and double degree overseas undergraduates of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. Particularly in 2012, the college established the first secondary discipline of "Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language" for Ph.D. candidates, and started to enrolling students home and abroad from 2013, as well as enrolling post-graduate of China Hanban "Confucius neo-sinology program", therefor, Our college formulated the multi-level talents training and school-running mode covering  the cultivation for post-graduate, graduate and undergraduate even advanced scholar and online correspondence education student, and established specially complete international Chinese Education professionals cultivation categories

The diversified measures of talent cultivation contain:


The first one is the internationalized teaching staff. At present, Overseas Education College insists on regularly inviting famous overseas scholars specializing in the field of International Chinese Education to be graduates' teachers, the graduates can get correspondent credits through taking the selective course, and our college also invited famous experts at home and abroad regularly to give academic lectures in various special subjects so as to complete internationalization system of graduate programs. So to say that the internationalization construction of curriculum system of graduate students strengthened graduate students' "consciousness of question recognizing".  


The second one is regular international communication. In recent years, OEC completely encourages graduate students to organize academic salon autonomously and put effort in improving their academic vision, simply in 2012, for example, there were 13 times academic salons have been organized. In the meanwhile, the college holds "Country-specific Chinese Language Teaching Materials International Academic Seminar" regularly, positively applies for hosting international academic conferences and requires graduate students to participate in, after holding "Senior Overseas Chinese Language Education Forum" continuously in 2011 and 2012, this year OEC will host "the 4th East Asia Sinology International Academic Seminar". Through taking in international academic exchange to get involved in the circle of International Chinese teaching, thus greatly cultivating graduate students' "frontier spirit".


The third one is the overseas teaching practice. OEC takes full advantage of the teaching platforms of the 15 Confucius Institutes cooperatively established by Xiamen University to require graduate students to teaching at last year's Chinese language abroad so as to let them better understand and involve in overseas Chinese language teaching. Besides, the graduate students are required to undertake Chinese language teaching task independently during their stay in China, in this case to make full preparation for teaching overseas and improved graduate students' "native consciousness" in Chinese language teaching.


The last one is concealed essays evaluation system. OEC takes full use of domestic and overseas academic resources to carry out double concealed evaluation system for all academic papers, the college set up specialist base of relevant domestic and overseas academic fields, and randomly invites specialist in the corresponding fields to have anonymous review on graduate's essays according to the fields in which the essays involves in, it, on one hand, improves tutor's instruct ability and student's "consciousness of responsibility" on the other hand.


In order to improve graduate student's academic writing and scientific research capacities, in recent years, OEC published "International Chinese Language Journals", "Confucius Institute Development Research" and "QUARTERLY JOURNAL OF CHINESE STUDIES" three academic magazines successively after having published "Overseas Chinese Language Education" and "Overseas Chinese Language Education Trend" two magazines, which provides platforms for the publication of graduate student's papers. It can be seen that OEC actively innovated graduate student's cultivation mode, fully expended graduate student's academic vision, strengthened consciousness of question recognizing, improved frontier spirit, native consciousness and consciousness of responsibility, and it successful reached expected goal of cultivation of Chinese Language Education majored graduate student.    


Future Development Prospect
Now Overseas Education College of Xiamen University is both the China State Council Overseas Chinese Affairs Office Chinese language education base and support unite of China Hanban International Chinese Promotion base in southern areas. Combining the new strategy in international Chinese promotion, OEC starts with cultivating professionals who have international vision, interest in international Chinese language education and spirit of devotion and pioneering, and can be engaged in all tasks in international Chinese promotion to continuously reform working mechanism, carry out commission of "talent cultivation, scientific research, social work, culture heritage" so as to meet talents demand of Chinese language teaching development.


In recent years, OEC makes every effort to strengthen the integrality with the international Chinese language promotion base in southern areas, all staffs of the college shoulder to shoulder, overcame the difficulties even under the conditions of a serious shortage of teachers, and the college takes serving international Chinese language promotion and Confucius Institution construction as final goal, takes construction of network platform and information resource, takes talent cultivation and teaching materials development as a leader and takes International Chinese Education and culture communication research and market promotion as goal to develop  the survey and research on the utilizing of international Chinese education, teachers and teaching materials, to build online education system and teaching resource supporting system, to develop country-specific teaching materials and teaching methods, to train teaching staff and volunteers, to establish Chinese language promotion talents pool, to implement theoretical research and application development of international Chinese language promotion, to establish academic journals platforms for international Chinese education and to concentrate on improving the ability and standard of supporting Confucius Institute' construction.
