1. Marine city with mild climate
Shall we think of Xiamen a city on the sea or one with the sea inside? Just imagine a coastal city combining blue sky, breeze, islets, reefs, waves, beach, hills, rocks, temples, trees, flowers and birds! The climate is so favorable that it seems only spring lingering here all year round. Xiamen, known as Amoy in ancient times, is also famous for its special folk customs, Hokkien dialect, sea food, pianos, buildings with east & west styles as well as a hometown for nearly 400 thousand overseas Chinese.
2. Hometown for overseas Chinese for centuries
Xiamen is one of the main hometowns for overseas Chinese. It is said that one in four native persons here have overseas relatives. The earliest oceangoing shipping, railways, inland water & land-and-water coordinated transport to south Fujian Province were mostly invested and founded by overseas Chinese. They made a great contribution to the establishment and development of Xiamen's early industry, commerce and education in modern history. Among the most famous patriotic overseas Chinese, Mr. Tan Kah Kee devoted his entire asset to the cause of education and founded Xiamen University and Jimei School Village as well as some other colleges and schools in Xiamen. As recompense, Xiamen University is planning to build a campus in Malaysia where our university founding father initiated his business.
3. Garden-like campus
Lying between the foot of green hills and the blue sea, Xiamen University is well known as the garden-like school on the sea. Its three campuses decorate the beautiful Xiamen bay like three marvelous pearls in a circle, magnificent and graceful.
4. Global horizons
The University has international co-operative ties with over 170 institutions of higher education both at home and abroad. Xiamen University has set up 15 Confucius Institutes around the world which play an important role in promoting international Chinese language. Because of its especially favorable geographical location and advantageous human resources, it is the key university most actively engaged in educational, scientific and cultural exchanges with Taiwan.
5. Well equipped with facilities for study, daily life and entertainment
There are banks, cafeterias, supermarkets, bookstores, gymnasiums, internet centers on campus where students can pay mostly by XMU E-card. The university is also equipped with sports fields for football, tennis, badminton and golf, as well as swimming pools, piano rooms and concert halls.

Founded in 1956, as one of the oldest institutions in China offering teaching programs to overseas students, Overseas Education College always puts much emphasis on building a strong team for teaching Chinese as a foreign language. They have profound knowledge and good first-hand teaching experience as well as high teaching quality. The college also makes full use of the advantages of being part of the comprehensive university and invites experts and scholars in related academic areas to teach some of the courses.
7. Chinese language international promotion
In order to serve the international promotion of Chinese language and construction of Confucius Institutes, the college performs comprehensive functions including construction of online platforms and information resources, survey on the current situation of Chinese teaching, teachers and textbooks, construction of supporting system of training distance teachers and providing teaching resources, development of country-specific textbooks and teaching methods, teacher and volunteer training, construction of the talent pool of Chinese teachers, as well as theoretical research and application development of teaching Chinese to foreigners.
8. Tailor-made courses
The college places students into different classes according to their Chinese levels and offers suitable courses for them. The college also opens various optional courses for them to broaden their knowledge. Besides, the college adopts flexible credit system and so foreign students are allowed to join the third grade of undergraduate Chinese program directly if they have the HSK 5 certificate and to graduate after completing required courses of certain credits in two years.
9. Colorful activities and abundant exchanges
The college not only assists foreign students in celebrating their festivals like Christmas and Songkran Festival, but also invites them to take part in Chinese traditional ones like Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-autumn Day. Together with Xiamen University students from mainland China, foreign students also actively join various student activities, such as alumni association, student association, Marathon, Foreign Language Karaoke Competition, Chinese Corner, English Corner, French Corner, etc. The college launches the Language Buddy System which enables Chinese and foreign students to find friends and learn foreign language with the help of each other.
10. Capable graduates
After long years of cultivation and development, like flowers always blooming in our garden, OEC graduates demonstrate their talents everywhere in the world including many famous overseas Chinese writers, educators, politicians and businessmen. Every year, the passing rate of HSK tests taken by OEC students is up to over 95%. Our students achieved great success in the past years of Chinese Bridge--Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign Students in China and many of them became "an old China hand" well-known to both foreign and Chinese students. Besides, hundreds of high school students from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao and abroad trained by OEC succeed in passing the college entrance examination every year and continue their study in universities and colleges in mainland China.
